CLERGHH! CLERGHH! CLERGHH!
The performance was over in seconds. For each jittery note Max produced, the accordion sprang, burped and popped. Dinner plates started wobbling on edge. Someoneâs wine goblet cracked. Before long, even Maxâs ears felt like jelly. He worried his brain cells would puncture.
âBooooo!â yelled Salieri.
âRetire!â cried Mozart, hurling his wet wig at Max.
The accordion was spinning in raptures, producing foul noises that no human instructor could teach. It suddenly reared itself up like a cobra!
âNo music! No food! No HEAD!â it cried, lunging at Max.
âOff, off, off with his head!â sang the table.
The accordion leaned closer, revealing the sticky hole of its throat. Max fought to escape, but the accordion had pinned back his arms.
âElton Chomp will forgive ⦠my appetite,â it burped.
Maxâs vision went dark. The accordionâs gaping throat was upon him. He was about to be eaten.
âExcuse me!â scoffed a voice. âBefore you do that, may I have a turn?â
Maxâs eyes widened. Mylo! he thought.
But the voice wasnât Myloâs. It belonged to a prim-looking girl of about twelve years old. She strode into the kitchen like a prima ballerina. A Nobel Prize winner. A world champion!
Everyone stared at herâeven the sluglike accordion. Max twisted out of its clutches.
âMy sincerest apologies to the chef,â said the girl. âI am appallingly late, arenât I?â Her shining eyes danced around. âGoodness, where are my manners? Hello, everyone. Mother. Father. Ahem. Clarinets. Iâm Jessamine, Maxâs sister. His big sister.â
As Jessamine curtsied, something in her hip pocket flashed.
Something copper.
