CLERGHH! CLERGHH! CLERGHH!

The performance was over in seconds. For each jittery note Max produced, the accordion sprang, burped and popped. Dinner plates started wobbling on edge. Someone’s wine goblet cracked. Before long, even Max’s ears felt like jelly. He worried his brain cells would puncture.

“Booooo!” yelled Salieri.

“Retire!” cried Mozart, hurling his wet wig at Max.

The accordion was spinning in raptures, producing foul noises that no human instructor could teach. It suddenly reared itself up like a cobra!

“No music! No food! No HEAD!” it cried, lunging at Max.

“Off, off, off with his head!” sang the table.

The accordion leaned closer, revealing the sticky hole of its throat. Max fought to escape, but the accordion had pinned back his arms.

“Elton Chomp will forgive … my appetite,” it burped.

Max’s vision went dark. The accordion’s gaping throat was upon him. He was about to be eaten.

“Excuse me!” scoffed a voice. “Before you do that, may I have a turn?”

Max’s eyes widened. Mylo! he thought.

But the voice wasn’t Mylo’s. It belonged to a prim-looking girl of about twelve years old. She strode into the kitchen like a prima ballerina. A Nobel Prize winner. A world champion!

Everyone stared at her—even the sluglike accordion. Max twisted out of its clutches.

“My sincerest apologies to the chef,” said the girl. “I am appallingly late, aren’t I?” Her shining eyes danced around. “Goodness, where are my manners? Hello, everyone. Mother. Father. Ahem. Clarinets. I’m Jessamine, Max’s sister. His big sister.”

As Jessamine curtsied, something in her hip pocket flashed.

Something copper.
